This contemporary video Exhibition was an opportunity for me to participate and explore other possibilities in showing a small section of my study project and get the feedback that I can build and develop from. This opportunity gave me more courage in dealing with galleries and explaining the context of my work to within artist community and art audience.

Contemporary Video Art Exhibition

Exhibition runs daily: 14th April to 27 April
Evening Screening with talks: Thursday 21st April 6-8pm

Surface is proud to introduce Surface Shorts, an exhibition of contemporary video work featuring over 20 international emerging film makers, artists and animators.

The Gallery will be transformed into a screening space showing a selection of contemporary video works from 14th - 27th April. Featuring narrative, documentary, performance, installation, animation and music video this diversely curated exhibition programme aims to playfully investigate the spectrum of the moving image medium. Filmmakers hail from across the U.K and as far afield as South Korea, Russia, Greece, India, Ireland and the U.S.A.

The exhibition is open daily Tuesday to Saturday over the two week period. With a special screening evening taking place on Thursday 21st April, where we’ll be inviting a selection of the participating artists to reveal more about their video practice followed by a feature screening.

Memories in Time, is an attempt to investigate the historical dimension of the the human suffering. In this video work I have deployed a moving images in a contrast to a still image to facilitate a dialogue with the events that had a big impact on my life.

I am taking a journey back to Halabja, sitting on an empty door steps, next to the fossilised bodies of a child and father; wanting to have a long discussion, listening to their endless stories. I also want to tell my endless stories.

The continued movement of the paper plain is to represent my constant feeling of compulsory divorce from my past. The paper plain conveys a multiplicative representation; representing the pure childhood that I was denied of, when the real airplanes came in hundreds with poisonous chemical weapons to kill every living being in Halabja. It is representing myself, the games that I played with my childhood friends, children's representation of wars, destruction, but also children's imagination and the desire to explore, the surrounding.

At the time of the attack, I was studying away from Halabja and my family. I escaped the death, but I feel that one part of me is buried with my people in Halabja and the other part is still writing down the memories of destroyed hopes and the hopes that grow high everyday.

The translated poem that was written after 1988, represents a generation after the tragedy, the generation that tried to communicate the event,providing an emotional and logical response to the tragedy of Halabja as a fragment of the human suffering in the current system.

Celebrating The Black History Month is an opportunity for everyone to recognize and appreciate what contribution black and asian people have made throughout history. Recognizing that the suffering and discrimination committed against black and asian people, must be condemned and eliminated for ever. It is a celebration with an attempt to create a harmonious and peaceful living environment to be enjoyed by every on in the world.

With the theme of Black History Month, Celebrating Diversity, the workshop aimed to provide a brain and visual exercise, where children from different backgrounds are provided with an opportunity to develop an interest in each others background, to listen to each others stories about who they are and where they come from, finding similarities and learn how to value each other.

Interviewing each other, describe and draw and painting a portraits of your favorite person; generated a big interest and enthusiasm among children to express themselves and to create a valuable art works as the result of the workshop. The outcome art work is a true celebration of diversity with its representational element of the value and the beauty of all people across nations and ethnicities.

The workshop achieved its objectives in producing this wonderful art work by the participating children.

WIth attendance of about 30 people, the event started at 6 pm. Ian Sergeant introduced me as a resident artist and I briefly talked through my project, my art and my aims in developing the artworks while resident at NAE.

I would like to take this opportunity to give my thanks and appreciation to every one who made the time and came to the event. A big thanks also to those ones who contributed to the discussion with their constructive comments and valuable opinion.

The Video work will stay on display until 17th September. I hope that every one can spear some time to drop in and see my video work and the photo montage works.

I will also be available at the studio some evenings working on the project, so any one who would like to have a chat with me, please let me know so we can arrange a time.

Working with archive images with a historical representation is never an easy task. I set these challenges for myself to combine the significance of archive visual documents with their present narrative elements that communicate a powerful stories and a history that rooted in my current understanding of the surrounding existence. As and artist, I am trying to re-write the history. In the image on the left, I have inserted an image of myself, positioning it next to the dead bodies of the chemical attack in the town Halabja. I am communicating my ongoing feeling of guilt that I escaped the attack and survived while I could have been one of those 5000 people who lost their lives 22 yeas ago.

In the right hand side image, I ones again inserted my self into to the images of people who are walking away from their homes and it is unclear where from and where they are going to. this gives a depth in meaning and uncertainty of place and time, and this for me represents the ongoing phenomenon of displacement and refugee that is very current at our epoch.

Using photoshop, I have produced this work with intention to visualise the events and the horror and fear of war. the original image is about the ethnic conflict in Kurdistan after the Iraq invasion. I have erased the figure in the original photo and placed my self instead wearing a mask. This kind of masks are usually used for protection from poisons weapons, but there is no such weapon used to destroy this village in Kurkuk, but I am as one of the chemical survivors witnessing the ongoing human suffering in Iraq.

In these visual studies using photoshop, I try to examine a personal dimension of displacement and exile. by looking at my own experiences, where as far as I remember, I have had a constant feeling of rejection and expulsion within the geographical and political existence. living in constant conflicts, wars, and in the state of fear, since i was about 5 years old, accumulated questions in my mind have been waiting for a logical explaniation. With the lens of my own story I am trying to look at the issue on the global and historical level in order to understand the phenomenon in its all dimensions.

As one of the participants at the protest, I wanted to record and make this video in respond to my overwhelming feelings of rejections and not being accepted by those whom blindly direct their racist attacks and blame on people who escaped and sought protection.

I was anxious to attend the protest as some of my friends were worried that I might get attacked or hurt by EDL supporters, but I wanted to take part and I thought that it is not us should be afraid to defend the secular and progressive believes, but people who are attacking those progressive and human values should be anxious and worried to publicly protesting and spreading hatred against none white british people.

eventually and by about 2 pm on that day, our number increased and I estimated the crowed about 1000 people and that was a good turnout, later on I realized that there has been other groups confronting the main crowd of EDL. the protest aimed to not let the EDL to march in the city of Nottingham as they planned and succefully the EDL could not appear in the main parts of the town and they were stopped around the train station. Later I was told that when our protest ended at about 5.30 pm, then some of the remaining people of EDL walked around city centre chanting their anti Muslim and anti immigrants slogans.
